Molly Sellors is co-founder and Artistic Director of The Ordinary Orchestra, which she is developing alongside horn player Dr Isaac Shieh. Based in Glasgow and launching in 2027, the disabled and neurodivergent-led orchestra combines period instruments, electronic dance music, rave culture and contemporary collaborations.
The Ordinary Orchestra questions what classical music can be, who it is for and where it belongs. Its plans include orchestral raves, collaborations with DJs and producers, and free performances in unexpected everyday spaces, such as shops, cafés or even under the motorway. Through these experiences, it aims to introduce audiences to historical instruments and create new ways to engage with orchestral music.
Disability is central to its artistic identity and working practices. Drawing on Molly and Isaac’s lived experience as disabled musicians, the orchestra is being developed with accessibility embedded in its rehearsals, communication, creative decisions and performances. Flexible working practices and relaxed performance formats will support disabled artists and welcome audiences who may have felt excluded from traditional concert settings.
As a social media-led orchestra, digital content is a core part of its artistic output. Ahead of its live launch, The Ordinary Orchestra is developing period-instrument EDM covers, content introducing its musicians and instruments, and opportunities for audiences to follow its development. This online community will help shape the orchestra as it grows. The orchestra also welcomes brand partnerships and event sponsorship, offering businesses creative ways to reach new audiences, bring people into their spaces and give them an experience worth sharing.
In 2026, The Ordinary Orchestra won first prize in the Performing & Production Arts Challenge at the Converge Awards, receiving £10,000 to support its development. The funding will enable its first three months of social media content, building an audience ahead of its 2027 launch.
